Even Stars Can Die

emerald ash borer

Alas, Emerald Ash Borer has reached Crossroads. Ironically, while we were saying “it’s just a matter of time” the tiny green insects already were damaging our trees. While some of our ash still appear healthy, many are fading and sadly, an increasing number of our ash trees have died. So now what?

One Wednesday, September 16 at both 2:00 pm and 6:00 pm, the Door County Invasive Species Team (DCIST) and Door Property Owners will offer the program, “Emerald Ash Borer–What’s New and What’s Next?” Linda Williams, a forest health specialist from the Wisconsin DNR will present the latest Emerald Ash Borer information for Door County.

The lecture will include information on recognizing when a ash tree has become infested, what is involved in saving an important ash specimen, options for disposal of wood after an infested ash has been harvested. Time will be allotted for discussion and questions on ash, and also beech bark disease, and DCIST will provide an overview of current projects and upcoming events.

Our very smallest learners are invited to attend the Pluto Club on Friday, September 11 at 3:30. Back by popular request (we offered this program several years ago), age appropriate activities to introduce the basics of astronomy will be offered throughout the school year for children ages 4-6 (though first and second grade students are welcome, as are older siblings and adults.) The topic of this meeting is “Planets.” The program is free and open to the public.

Learners of all ages are encouraged to join the members of the Door Peninsula Astronomical Society for an evening of skygazing at Crossroads’ Astronomy Campus (please use the Utah Street Entrance–marked by the sculpture of an Exo Planet) on Saturday, September 12. Saturn should be visible in the west and the Summer Triangle will be directly overhead. The gate opens as dusk. This is a clear sky only event and it is free.
